about

Monologue.

I see the grave’s been kind to you
You look like you’ve stared fear in the face
And found it was an angel

--

Those first nights, first years
I had to learn to love the living
Empty and alone, or so I thought

I flinched from the world

My soul, torn suddenly from yours
Frayed at the edges
Still moved towards you like the sun
To grow

I’d walk to places you don’t go
You’d find me
And there I’d feel that you’d surround me
Yet be sure
You left long ago
And try to figure why
I felt it was so

--

I tried to learn how to forget
Then the gypsies showed me how
To haunt the memories
Saying that my ghost inside
That other realm was as real as you had been

Cracks in the pavement
Opened up and made me clandestine
And like you giving nothing wings to me
Took a welcome bleak, black cloak, and
Blind-sculpted reality

But on the ground I
Turned out all the lights and was not seen
Or heard - covered my eyes and ways
And I kept the ghost fed and keen for me
On starvation and decay

While drunken exorcisms
Faded ink and bolted doors
And cut me loose from the other side of the knot.

For you, I would have tied myself up in many
And even hung from that same rope

--

I can’t say you’re the one thing
That kept my hands on the wheel that time
Back then, even your daemons came to be near me
And reached into my heart
To turn the dial that rusted over
And make the clock restart

They say that in those standstill times
Your soul’s really close
And in the four walls I definitely caught sight
Of it echoing ahead the next few metres
Where I couldn’t cast my headlights

--

I saw you in the flames of my desire
And memories
And visions
And trees, patterns, stories, dreams

All alibis
All testimonies

--

But I must ask you now

If sky and space begin beside me
Or will I move all sun and laughter
To the horizon
